The Harm & Mac Relationship

Harm/Mac 101. Lt. Cmdr Harmon Rabb Jr first laid eyes on Major Sarah Mackenzie back in the episode "We The People" after he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the President. Amazement & shock lit his face as he realized the uncanny resemblance between the then Marine Major and his dead girlfriend. Of course at this point began the flurry of shipper JAG fanfics being posted all over the Net. Six seasons later (Season 8 is the latest), no loose ends has been tied, and they are back at the beginning. (remember JAGathon?)

What! Of all the....

Ah well, the shippers lament. Ever since they first met, many proclaimed they are meant to be together. So many reasons. Yet nothing much has happened. One wonders. Of course many argue it would just kill off the series. So they developed the new Mac character. A tough by-the-book Marine. Major Sarah Mackenzie is not Lt. Diane Schonke, Harm realized. Oh yes, Harm can charm the birds off a tree but not this Marine. And thus began the new partnership of two equally headstrong and capable military lawyers. This was the premise of JAG. The dynamic duo of the JAG Corps. Plus with all the tension of working so closely together, it would make a helluva good drama.

JAG was certainly promising.

Unfortunately, good things do come to an end. Season 5 and 6 saw Mac & Harm having their relationship soured. Mac did approach Harm on confronting their feelings as early as in Season 4's "Silent Service" when she mentioned there might be 'some deeper issues'. She wanted to talk about it but Harm merely brushes her off saying 'This is not a marriage.' They were already in the cramped quarters of a submarine and Harm *still* wanted to run away from the issue.

Again in Season 5, Mac tries to make Harm connect the dots. On a ship sailing the Sydney Harbour. I think TPTB gave the shippers an answer. It seems eternity is how long they have to wait. Thus from there began the decline and the breaking up of the partnership. There was Mic Brumby who apparently pulled all stops to get Lt.Col Sarah Mackenzie's love and Renee Peterson who saw something in the charming grin of the handsome flyboy.

Thank god it all ended. No Mic and no Renee. Mic realized that he is Mac's second choice, packs his bags and returns to Australia. Renee left Harm too. Who wouldn't, seeing how commitment-phobe Harm is?

But most of all, I like to thank the writers for redeeming Mac....finally. "I am so SICK of this dance." For once, she has become more forthcoming about her feelings and not to mention, her frustration. Harm has obviously thought that Mac would wait for him..."You expect me to stay single forever?". Believe me, at this point of time, even the most die-hard shippers would think twice of whether Harm is the right one for Mac. I am not a shipper per se, some say a shipper in denial. But after six seasons, it gets nauseating watching them moving back & forth. Mac is right. Viewers are also sick of the dance.

I really hope by the time JAG ends the two of them will get together. For the sake of the stomach contents of the fans.
